A Personal Glimpse
of WriteGirl's January Creative Nonfiction Workshop
By Tiffany Cheng
The
January 11th WriteGirl workshop consisted of creative nonfiction
and personal stories. While also being informative, the
workshop was extremely fun. I, as well as the other members, wrote
everything from our favorite recipes to writing a short “How-To” list.
I had participated in both, talking about my love for chalupas
to a list on "How To Chase Guys Away." Coincidentally,
another mentee, Shawna, had written "How to Get Ready For
a Date," so we had a blast presenting ours together.
The instructors, Claire Sera, Debbie Reber
and Cecelia Lee, were very helpful and had such comedic characters,
which made the workshop even more fun. Though I had come a little
late, I fell right into the writing tasks easily. I had been worried
about being late and disrupting the entire workshop, but once I
got there, everyone was so into their writing that I barely stood
out. The intense writing was contagious because once I set my pen
to my journal I couldn't stop. The work was so fun it didn't seem
like work at all.
I think this workshop really increased
everyone's confidence, especially the mentees. I learned
a lot about everyone and I feel much more confident now due to
participating. Almost all the mentees voluntarily read their writing,
which was very great! My confidence had definitely increased because
my wonderful mentor, Stephanie Bowen, kept volunteering me to go
and participate. At first, I was hesitant, but I really had no
choice but to go up there and read. A lot of thanks goes to her
because now I see that reading out loud to others is a gift and
I should cherish every second that I am up there.
I loved to hear all the creative stories. It
shows you some of the characteristics that the reader has. I especially
liked the one from, Nancy Katz who read her list on "How to
Lose Weight in 5 Easy Steps" in our small group. It had a
good sense of humor because it was mocking the fact that women
don't have self-control and will eventually give in to food. Even
though they were personal stories, we all added a bit of humor
to them, which made the workshop a blast! I learned that adding
a slight sense of humor to your stories will spark it up and attract
many more readers than just a boring, simple story. This WriteGirl
workshop involved tons of humorous stories, therefore WriteGirl
is not only a writing club for girls but it also gives lots of
happiness, causing the workshops to be one happy family!
