A WriteGirl on Writing
By Romelyn Gutierrez

Writegirl My first writing experience changed my life drastically. As a student in school, I never really cared about getting good grades. From 1st grade to 7th, I dubbed myself a nobody. I was never praised for anything. After all what could the teachers say? “Wow! Such a fabulous 56% on that math quiz. Bravo Romelyn...” Their faces would just remain blank and then they'd say, “summer school.”

“Again?” I thought.

Then one day in 7th grade, our English teacher, Mr. Martin, brought out cards and passed them around the class. I got one with a toy train, a little boy and his grandfather. We were to write a short story about the picture (much like the exercises at WriteGirl).

I thought to myself, “At least I'd be doing something interesting.”

The next day we handed them in. Mr. Martin came back in the afternoon and talked to us about our stories, how some people refused to do the assignment and how some were “very good.” Then he told us that there was one that he considered his favorite. I sighed, thinking, “It's probably Kristina or Joshua, or one of the other smart people. He read a line, “..somehow, the pieces of the train had inched their way into the sofa cushions.”
I thought “Hey! That's my paper!” I felt something I had never felt before. Pride? Joy? I'm still not sure. From that point on I craved that feeling. And now I feel it everyday at school.

Sometimes I wonder, what if I had been out sick that day or if I had chosen not to do the assignment? I know I wouldn't be same person I am today. Who knew that a simple homework assignment could do something so major?

Writing has done so much for me. It has forced me to stand up and face what life has given me, and it has helped me to realize who I really am. WriteGirl has helped me to broaden my range of writing and led me to try new things, while doing the thing I love most.
