Welcome to the Socialite Spotlight: a weekly Wiles feature that shines the spotlight on fabulous men and women from all over the world! The focus of our first socialite spotlight is Keren Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of WriteGirl. WriteGirl was launched in December 2001 to bring the skills and energy of professional women writers to teenage girls who do not otherwise have access to creative writing or mentoring programs. Through one-on-one mentoring and monthly creative writing workshops, girls are given techniques, insights and hot topics for great writing in all genres from professional women writers. Workshops and mentoring sessions explore poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, songwriting, journalism, screenwriting, playwriting, persuasive writing, journal writing, editing and more. To date, WriteGirl anthologies have a total of 26 book awards. Keren Taylor and WriteGirl’s unique programming have received numerous awards and commendations for exemplary community service. While such recognition is much appreciated, WriteGirl is most proud of the accomplishments of its teen members...100% of our graduating seniors have entered college, many on full or partial scholarships. Last month Keren honored professional women writers at the “Bold Ink” Awards. in celebration of their 10th anniversary Honorees included Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses), Kara DioGuardi (Platinum, Ain’t No Other Man, American Idol), Winnie Holzman (Wicked, My So-Called Life), Savannah Dooley (Huge), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program, Bedwetter), Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).
WriteGirl partners with ad agency for Advertising, Advocacy & Blogging Workshop
We had a spectacular Advertising, Advocacy & Blogging Workshop on March 11th at the LA offices of ad agency 72andSunny! Thank you to the women writers at 72andSunny who volunteered their time to teach our girls about advocacy messaging! Thanks to all of our WriteGirl mentees for boldly sharing your voices! And thanks to Rubio's for a fantastic lunch! We hope you love these photos as much as we do!
