WriteGirl kicked off our 15th anniversary season with a record number of 108 girls in attendance at our annual journalism workshop held at Maker City LA on Nov. 14. The girls traveled to writing stations with their mentors where they learned about the essential elements of journalism including how to write in the inverted pyramid style, where the most important information is presented at the top of the story. They dissected newspaper articles to learn how to present the facts – the who, what, where, when, why, and how – and then used their new skills to craft their own stories and headlines.Read More

How exciting was the WriteGirl shout out in People Magazine? Comedian Jay Mohr and his wife, actress Nikki Cox, have collaborated on a new stand-up comedy special called *Happy. And a Lot.* From now through the end of December, they’re donating 100% of the proceeds from album sales on Mohr’s Bandcamp page to WriteGirl. The one-hour stand-up set was filmed during the Santa Barbara LOL Comedy Festival and features Mohr performing material written entirely by Cox, who combats her insomnia by writing. That makes us Happy. And a Lot!

WriteGirl welcomed a record number of new and returning girls to the annual Mentee Welcome Day at Impact Hub in Downtown Los Angeles on Oct. 3. In total, 101 teen girls and 52 volunteer mentors set off on this season's WriteGirl journey with boarding passes and passports to a series of travel-themed writing activities created and MC'd by WriteGirl Curriculum Director Kirsten Giles.Read More
Congratulations to WriteGirl alum Jeanine Daniels, who received the Rising Star Award at the African Women in Cinema's Women of Excellence Salute October 9 at the Morgan Stanley Headquarters in New York City. WriteGirl supporter Kim Purcell introduced Jeanine, whose groundbreaking web series "The Couple" was recently picked up for an HBO pilot deal. Her popular web series "That Guy," is based on her first feature film of the same name, which she then followed with its spin-off series, "Becoming Nia." Jeanine is a founding partner of the Black & Sexy TV media collaborative and is currently working on several new series, including producing and directing a documentary film on musicians whose work she features and develops mixtapes for throughout her creative endeavors.Read More
