Poetry was our jam this spring as WriteGirl mentees produced verse after vibrant verse for our annual Poetry Drive, culminating in a mini-workshop and reading at Chevalier’s Books on Larchmont Blvd. on May 14.
The girls and their mentors first roamed the Larchmont shopping district in small groups, collecting sights, sounds, and smells to inspire their poems. A dark brick alleyway, a stranger’s unique T-shirt, and an ugly luxury car were all fodder for our notebooks and smartphones as we explored the bustling neighborhood.
Then we headed back to Chevalier’s to hear the girls read their work in front of family, friends, and bookstore patrons. Fifteen girls shared poems prepared previously or produced that day, some serious, some silly, all inspiring.
