Voices of Women and Girls
Marianna
Vasquez, age 14
“Sometimes my apartment
building is very noisy, and I wish it was quieter so
I could sleep.” |
Trinity
Gonzalez-Aird, age 14
From WriteGirl’s poetry
workshop, inspired by a postcard of a Frida Kahlo painting.

Ivonne
Cortez, age 16
“As a teenager, it’s
hard to develop your own individuality when you’re
surrounded by media and propaganda that is trying to
make you change.”

@9.56
Outside & inside
At 9:56.
I could hear a man screaming at the TV.
A bird chirping for food
and a car honking on the street.
Lots of things going on
and nothing in me.
A mom yelling at her daughter
to get inside and sleep.
Some guyz on their skateboards
trying to do tricks.
Two little girls laughing,
laughing at their feet.
My mom watches a movie
and me, I’m just writing this
@9:56.

Frida Kahlo
An artist
A poet
A poet who sings
Through her colors,
Her shapes that
Come together.
Shapes that come
Together like words.
Like words in a song,
A song that soothes
That soothes her
Mind.
And mine as well.
Like words in a
Story that tell her
Life.
The story is the song
And the song is the
Paint that flows
On the canvas and
Makes a picture.
But it’s more than
A picture.
It’s a story
And
A song.

Scared
Scared that’s who I am,
I am a young girl stuck in a trance
I think misconceptions make up this society
It’s one of the things that make it hard to look inside of me
I’m scared of living a life of loneliness
Because I find it rather hard to live in happiness
I’m scared of not succeeding in life and being perceived as a failure
I’m scared of loving or experiencing things I never did before
I’m scared of losing because what do losers bring?
I’m scared of winning because it might change into a brand new
thing.
Whatever life brings my way
It’s up to me to go or to stay
The road ahead past these teenage years is never easy
And I know it’s a growing period in which I get to see
Who and what I choose to be
When and where I will be free
But for now I’ll hold my fears
Well at least for a few more years…
