WriteGirl is driven by its volunteers. With more than a dozen events annually and a growing membership of women and girls, WriteGirl needs your contribution of time and resources to help us to build a strong future. Now entering our 15th season, we are expanding our program to reach even more young voices in many more communities. You don’t have to be a published writer, just a strong communicator with a passion for writing and a commitment to helping girls succeed. Core Program Workshops Each month in the WriteGirl season (Fall through June), mentors lead creative writing workshops for the entire membership in their area of expertise, such as Poetry, Songwriting, Journalism, Screenwriting, Creative Nonfiction, etc. Workshops are lively, interactive and rich with writing tools, tips, techniques and shared secret recipes. In-Schools Program The In-Schools Program brings innovative creative writing workshops to critically at-risk teen girls at schools all over Los Angeles. Each workshop is lead by one of our In-Schools coordinators; volunteers help facilitate discussion and writing sessions with the students. Members who participate with the In-Schools Program on a weekly basis are not required to join another work team. Although, we still encourage you to join a team, and take part behind the scenes! Anthology Each year, WriteGirl publishes the collected works of our membership. All women and girls are encouraged to submit their writing—including you. Our volunteers work with the girls in one-on-one mentoring sessions and at workshops to edit their work for submission. All of WrteGirl’s anthologies have won book awards, both national and international.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU TRAINING: All volunteers are required to attend one training/orientation. Once we review your application, we will contact you with available trainings in September 2015. You’ll have a chance to learn more about WriteGirl’s goals and needs, meet the leadership, gain some specific communication skills and get answers to your burning questions. TIME: We ask you to commit to attend WriteGirl’s monthly workshops, held on Saturdays, 10:30am-4:30pm. In addition, we ask you to contribute at least three hours each month to help support our activities, behind the scenes.

PARTICIPATION: All activities, whether highly visible or completely behind-the-scenes, directly impact the women and girls of WriteGirl and the quality of their experience. We ask all members to participate on one of our volunteer teams. There will be more information about the teams and activities at the training/orientation session. We’ll do our best to match your skills, interests and availability with our needs.

COMMUNICATION: We ask our volunteers for clear and regular communication with our leadership, other volunteers and our girls.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US: We are a lean, hard-working, enthusiastic, supportive, hearts-on-our-sleeves group. You can expect tenacious and frequent communication from our leadership. We will do our best to offer you a rewarding experience volunteering with WriteGirl. We’re all about helping girls and women cultivate their creative voices, and we’re glad you decided to apply to join us. Thank you! If you have any questions, please email us at
