WriteGirl 5thSeason Celebration:
The beat on Doheny Street on June 24, 2006, was one of vibrant enthusiasm as WriteGirl women and girls, along with countless supporters, gathered at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills to celebrate the unveiling of WriteGirl’s 5th anthology, UNTANGLED: Stories & Poetry from the Women and Girls of WriteGirl.
Green and blue balloons covered the ceiling of the reception hall as guests participated in writing experiments, sipped on smoothies, and browsed the silent auction. Tables bordered the room displaying everything from Cynthia Vincent dresses and Dodger’s tickets to a stunning butterfly guitar and an original Man Ray.
Women and girls, families and friends, board members and honored guests filled the theater to hear the WriteGirls share their musings on family, growing up, love and more. Some even offered tips on how to overcome writer’s block. Comic relief, WriteGirl volunteer Maia Akiva, interviewed audience members about their own memories of being a teenager. Congratulations to Board Member John Marshall, and volunteers Kelly Merryman and Ellizabeth Gill on receiving the Friend of WriteGirl Awards for their outstanding support this season.
The spicy Caribbean chicken and rice, quesadillas and empanadas, generously provided by Cha Cha Cha, left everyone thirsty. It’s a good thing that beverages were flowing courtesy of Lightful Smoothies, Fiji Water, and PomWonderful Tea.
The founder, Keren Taylor, expressed her deep appreciation for WriteGirl friends and supporters and for the girls themselves who always surpass her wildest expectations. Emphasizing that the best things come in five – 5 senses, 5 seasons of WriteGirl, and now 5 anthologies, this is truly a landmark year for the organization. It’s just too bad the event had to end at 5p.m. when everyone would agree they could have read poetry and drank pomegranate tea well into the wee hours of the night.
