Excavating the Secrets of Creative Non-Fiction

On Saturday, January 25, over 100 WriteGirl mentors and mentees got an intimate view of the La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum during the Creative Non-Fiction Flash Workshop. This two-hour workshop explored many different types of creative nonfiction writing, including personal essays, memoirs, blogging, and literary journalism.

Buried treasures in the pungent tar pits and prehistoric artifacts at the Page Museum sent WriteGirl writers on a journey to unearth hidden senses, forgotten memories, and personal stories waiting to be told.

Under the warm winter sun, WriteGirl teens and mentors walked the site, visited the exhibits and wrote in their journals. Writing prompts were focused on memoir and inspired by the dig sites, bubbling tar, and fossils.

Everyone explored personal histories, ancestors, and their subconscious minds. Our first ever outdoor workshop allowed everyone to see creative non-fiction in a whole new light.
