WriteGirl Teens & Alums Learn Professional Skills at Career Week
More than a dozen WriteGirl interns, alums and high school seniors participated in a hands-on one-week job skills intensive at the WriteGirl office this month. They learned critical career skills including everything from a professional handshake and interviewing skills, to time management and business phone and email etiquette.
"Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of the professional world, I left Career Week feeling confident, motivated and supported in my future endeavors,” said WriteGirl Alum Brittany, age 19.
The girls heard from a diverse group of inspiring women professionals, including Mónica Garcia, LAUSD board member, and Elida Ledesma, Associate Director of the Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network, who discussed how to make yourself promotable. Later in the week, the girls had discussions with NBC4 News Reporter Beverly White, who spoke about diversity in the workplace, and LA Public Works Commissioner Aura Garcia, who highlighted how to know your limits in a high-intensity work environment.
The week came to a close with the sound of girls typing away at their resumes and newly created LinkedIn profiles, while also getting headshots taken by a professional photographer!
