From Mentee to Atomic Scientist: Meet WriteGirl Alumni
WriteGirl has thousands of alumnae studying and working all over the world. We’d like to introduce you to a few.
What do you get a teenage girl for the holidays?
What does she want?
What does she need?
Despite what she tells you, it’s not a hot new pair of jeans or an even flatter cellphone.
Those things are great, but they will only last a few years at best.
We have a list of things that will help a girl for her entire life…
Happy Holidays from WriteGirl
We blew the roof off the Music Center at the WriteGirl Songwriting Workshop a couple of weeks ago. Every teen girl – all 70 of them – was paired for the day with a woman writer. Twenty singer/songwriters joined us, to help coach our girls in writing song lyrics and offer insights into their creative processes. We listened to songs and analyzed their structure. We danced. We wrote about things we are passionate about.
‘TIS THE SEASON OF THE #UNSELFIE
SO what is “Giving Tuesday” exactly, you ask?
It’s the day following Black Friday & Cyber Monday…where we take a step back, think about everything we’ve gotten out of the holiday season and all of our moments of gratitude, and give a bit back to the universe in return.
We’re joining this movement to raise funds for WriteGirl…to expand our programs and make WriteGirl’s reach more vast & deep than ever, ensuring bright & bold futures

WriteGirl Exec. Dir. Keren Taylor featured in "The Visionary"
The new book The Visionary features WriteGirl Founder and Exec. Dir. Keren Taylor as one of 18 visionaries making an impact! Keren shares her vision to change the world by empowering girls through writing.
"We did the math one afternoon: our 150 volunteers give around 2,000 hours of their time every month. That is our way of bending time, of giving girls a new way to experience their high school years—a sort of parallel universe to school where they can express their ideas freely, ask questions of any kind and grow more confident in sharing their words out loud." – Keren Taylor

The 51 Percent: Conversations with Creative Women features WriteGirl Exec. Dir. Keren Taylor
Never underestimate the power of a girl and her pen. It's that philosophy that propelled Keren Taylor to start WriteGirl, a non-profit literacy program for underserved 13-18 year old girls in the L.A. area. Since its inception in 2001, it has helped hundreds of teens find their voices/calling and in 2013, Michelle Obama presented Keren and WriteGirl with the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the highest honor given to such endeavors. And just this year, Keren was selected a CNN Hero for her creative efforts to help young people. She is truly an inspiration.
